School Council and Parent Society Update

Feedback

Thank you to all who were able to make time to attend our council meeting last Thursday. Your input and participation is appreciated. The feedback that was shared by families at our February and March meetings, as well as our school learning conferences, is now available for all to view on our website. We hope you are able to find a bit of time to review the information, and share any questions you might have with us.

Meetings

The next meetings are Thursday May 7, at 7:00 PM in the Learning Commons and online. The council meeting is followed immediately by the society meeting. You can learn more about both roles on our website.

We NEED parents to attend these meetings. We have many amazing parents who attend on a monthly basis, many of them have stepped into council and society positions. In order to be able to pass any motions, including electing members to our council and society for next year, we NEED 5 parents who do NOT hold a role in attendance at each meeting. PLEASE mark your calendar to join us, online or in person, at 7:00 PM on Thursday May 7. Thank you for your support.

No School Friday, April 24

A reminder that there is no school for students this Friday, April 24. All staff will be participating in professional learning as part of our Maatoomsii’Pookaiks (Children First) System Indigenous Day of Learning.

Storytelling Sharing Invitation

On Wednesday this week (tomorrow) please look for a pink or green piece of paper in your child’s agenda. This is your official invitation to our Storytelling sharing evening. Thank you to those families who let us know if they had conflicts with evenings before April 1. We have done our best to accommodate all requests. We know that lacrosse, soccer, piano, dance, and all kinds of other activities are happening on these evenings. Please, if at all possible, allow your child to miss their other event on their performance evening so they can participate in this once in a lifetime activity. We are so looking forward to sharing the storytelling each student has been working on.

Regarding Class Placements for the 2026-27 School Year:

In the new school year your child will be assigned to a classroom. All students will receive notification from their teacher on Friday, August 28. If we are able to, we will continue to plan and welcome our complex learners to school that morning (August 28), as outlined in their transition plan in their IPP, to meet their new teacher.
Working in grade-level teams, our staff members take into consideration many variables when assigning your child to their classroom. They include demographics such as age and gender, maturation, abilities and talents, and relationships amongst the students to create the best overall groupings. Please be assured our decisions are based on the best interest of your child and their unique academic, social and behavioural needs within the school context.  If you require clarification about the process, or have information you would like us to consider in our vigorous process, please contact administration prior to May 14, 2026.

Respectful Behaviours

There have been an increasing number of incidents with students not keeping their hands and feet to themselves and not showing respect to some of the adults and peers in our school. Please review with your child what it means to be a safe, caring, welcoming and respectful student in the classroom, on the playground, and throughout the school. All adults in the building are here to keep your child safe and provide a fun, engaging learning environment. When students are consistently making unexpected comments, excluding others from games outside, talking during lessons, getting up constantly to visit their friends, spending too long in the bathroom, touching/grabbing others, touching/taking items from others, etc., it takes away from the learning of all students in the school. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions so we can work together to ensure AFS is a wonderfully safe, caring, welcoming and respectful school environment.
