Stay Informed

Good morning AFS families,

Winter Clothing Swap

We hope you are enjoying the lovely weather this weekend. If you are going through your winter clothing and happen to find any that is too small please consider donating to the council winter clothing swap. It will happen on Oct 30 around 12:30pm. If you are in need of replacements for those clothes, please stop by on the Friday the 30 and look for the next size of items for your child.

Parent Information Session - Self-Regulation

This week, on Thursday evening, from 6:30 – 7:30 parents are invited to join us in the AFS gym to learn more about self-regulation from our CBE OT (occupational therapist) Erin Novak. Our CCT (classroom complexity team), and some of our classroom teachers, will also be present. We are hopeful you have heard your child talking about regulating their emotions and body. This is an area of growth for many students, and those that are doing well can always use additional support. Having common language to speak about emotions and self-regulation is a powerful way to connect and support your child. Please plan to be at school on Thursday evening to learn more. Doors will open at 6:15. We look forward to seeing you then. If you have any questions please reach out to Ms. Sharpe.

Non-instruction day

There’s no school at all CBE schools today. The calendar was changed to accommodate the referendum and the use of many schools, including Alex Ferguson, as a voting station. Please do not bring your children to classes today. The doors are open, but school is not in session. Teachers will be working on our SDP (school development plan) for the 26-27 school year, learning more about the new social studies curriculum, as well as diving into school wide self regulation strategies.

Grandparent Reading Program

We are launching our grandparent reading program for the school year. Thank you to our returning grandparents, the students are looking forward to spending time with you again this year. If you know of a grandparent, or community member, who would be interested in volunteering with our grandparent reading program please reach out to the office to start the police clearance process and learn more about the program.

Grade 6 Immunization

Grade 6 immunizations are scheduled to happen next Monday, October 26. The school nurse has shared that there are a number of outstanding forms. If you have not already done so, and your child is in grade 6, please complete the forms and return them to the school as soon as possible. Thank you.

Scooters and Bikes on School Grounds

An outside safety reminder. Please reinforce that we ask for scooters and bikes to be walked when on school property. Due to the high number of people on the school grounds during the day it is safer for everyone it we walk our transportation vehicles. Thank you.

Naturalization Area - please walk, be calm and quiet

In addition, our naturalization area is designated as a calm, quiet space. Students have been reminded to walk in this area, as well as to treat the plants with respect. We have far too many broken branches, and even a few broken trees, so far this school year. We would appreciate if you could please reinforce the school message to students that they should be using this space respectfully. Thank you.

Casino

The major fund generating event for the school is a casino. The next AFS casino is scheduled to be held in February. This biannual event pays for numerous activities and supplies to support all students at Alex Ferguson each school year. Examples include the upcoming Alien Inline residency, the soon to be installed picnic tables, reduced expenses for all families for off site (field trips), classroom headphones, all inclusive fun lunches, and so much more. PLEASE sign up for a shift to support this event, and our school.  Bring a friend, volunteers do not have to be parents of current Alex Ferguson students. A free meal is provided, and there’s lots of time to chat! Thank you for your support.

We look forward to welcoming all students back to school tomorrow morning.
