Good morning AFS families,
Recently there have been a lot of traffic concerns around our school. Examples of concerns that have been reported to me include:
- U-turns in the playground zone
- Parking on the wrong side of the street
- Parking/stopping in (or too close to) intersections
PLEASE obey the rules of the road. PLEASE be safe. We all lead busy lives. We are all in a rush somedays. The safety of our children is worth taking a few extra minutes to drive around the block and be safe. On Thursday morning there was a family who came running across the field because there wasn’t available parking where they expected. They were still on time, even if they were late, we are thankful that they choose to be safe. We are all in this together. If you see others making unsafe choices please remind them, kindly, that we need to work together to keep our children safe. Education is key. Thank you for your support.
Our winter assemblies are this coming Wednesday. The AM kindergarten, and ALL grades 1 – 6 students will be starting their assembly at 10am. The PM kindergarten, and ALL grades 1 - 6 students, will then be starting their assembly at 1:30pm. Everyone is invited to come and watch these performances. Please choose the ONE that works best for your schedule. This will allow us the space to welcome everyone into the gym to enough the performances.
Our holiday lunch is happening on Wednesday December 18. All students will be provided a lunch that day, regardless of payment. If you would like to learn more about the holiday lunch please check out healthyhunger.ca Thank you to the school council for organizing and including all staff and students in this event.
Seasonal Support
In the past, the school council has worked to raise funds to support various organizations including the Mustard Seed (Fill a Sock), Adopt a Family, and Calgary Food Bank. The past few years the focus has been on supporting our AFS families in need with food, presents, and gift cards. As we all know there are greater needs in our city this year, and the number of families in need continues to increase while the number of families who are able to provide additional support to others continues to decrease.
One of the ways that we are working to support all families is by inviting practicum social workers into our building. Ms. Jolene and Ms. Riley will be back in January and we are thankful they have chosen to complete their final practicum with the CBE. During their time here over the last few months they have researched places that are available to support all families. They have created three handouts with our community in mind:
- Winter Holiday Resource List
- Information about 12 organizations, how to contact them, and how they are able to support
- How to Help Families in Calgary
- Information about 6 organizations, how to contact them, how to support the work they do within our community
- Low-Cost Winter Activities
- 10 ideas of things to do over the winter break (including free Santa photos!)
If you would like a copy of any or all of these handouts please let me know and I will send them home with your child. Please send an email listing which sheets you would like, and which child you would like them sent home with.
This year the school will not be distributing any food, presents, or gift cards.
Have a wonderful week.
Your AFS Administrative Team
