Good morning AFS families and our future families,
We trust you all had a good long weekend and are ready for the last 6 weeks of this school year. That means 15% of the school year is yet to come! There are lots of exciting things, along with a whole lot of learning, in store for all the students between now and the end of the year.
As we are sure you have heard, Grade 1&2, and 2&3 classes have been engaging in a special learning experience by using incubators to help hatch ducklings right in their classrooms!
This brings the science curriculum to life as students explore life cycles, the needs of living things, and the process of animal growth and change. By observing eggs daily, tracking their development, and witnessing hatching, students are thinking like scientists through observation, prediction, and recording data.
Beyond science, this experience is also a powerful lesson in empathy and care. Students were tasked with the responsibility of monitoring the incubators and caring for the hatchlings, supporting them in being gentle, attentive, and compassionate.
We are happy to provide opportunities like this that connect curriculum with social emotional learning, helping our young learners grow into thoughtful, curious, and kind individuals. We are also thankful to the Parent Society for their generosity to reduce the cost of this opportunity for all families.
Only two more sleeps till dance night! Your school council is hosting their annual dance, with the theme NEON Glow. ALL CHILDREN MUST BE SUPERVISED BY THEIR PARENTS FOR THE FULL DURATION OF THIS EVENT. Please plan on stopping by between 6:30 – 8:30 on Thursday night. If you have purchased tickets online please share that at the welcome table when you arrive.
Do you know of any neighbours, or might you have a kindergarten student joining AFS in September? We are hosting our annual kindergarten orientation from 5:00 – 6:00 on Thursday June 5. All 2025-2026 future kindergarten students and their parents, are invited to join us at this event. They will have the opportunity to meet their teacher and check out the school. Parents will also have the chance to sign up to receive all messaging from the parent society next year.
A reminder that all our website calendar shares all our known events for the duration of the school year. Grade 6 parents, the farewell ceremony will be on Tuesday, June 24. All parents are also invited to look at the school calendar that was shared in the welcome package at the beginning of the school year.
Class placement for the 2025-2026 school year: In the new school year your child will be assigned to a classroom. All students will receive notification from their teacher on Friday, August 29. If we are able to, we will continue to plan and welcome our complex learners to school that morning (August 29), as outlined in their transition plan of their IPP, to meet their new teacher and see their new classroom space.
Working in grade-level teams, our staff members take into consideration many variable when assigned your child to their next classroom. They include demographics such as age and gender, maturation, abilities and talents, and relationships amongst the students to create the best overall groupings. Please be assured our decisions are based on the best interest of your child and their unique academic, social and behavioural needs within the school context. If you require clarification about the process, or have information you would like us to consider in our vigorous process, please contact administration prior to May 30, 2025. Thank you.
Have a great week.
Your AFS Administrative Team
Helen Sharpe and Matthew Littel
