Hello AFS families,

This afternoon your child participated in our second lockdown drill of the year. Legislation requires that we practice 6 fire drills and 2 lockdowns each school year.

Officer Borrows was here to support our practice. Please ask your child about their experience. They should be able to tell you about:

  • hearing the echo down the hallway
  • sitting between the doors (most classrooms have 2 doors)
  • their teacher being closest to the door
  • everyone looking in the same direction (away from the wall, usually out a window)
  • feeling safe in their space
  • the police officer coming to their classroom to tell them that they did well and give tips as to how to stay safe

This time the echo was started by a classroom teacher, who then did the intercom announcement as well. Please find some time to chat to your child about their experience. If they have any questions you can’t answer, please let us know. The classroom teachers review expectations frequently and can incorporate questions into their regular teachings.

Staff Appreciation Event

Thank you to everyone who has signed up to provide food and beverage for our staff appreciation event on June 3. If you would like to share some of your traditional foods for this event please check out the sign up created by Hamaa.

Celebration of Learning

We look forward to seeing everyone next Thursday evening for our Celebration of Learning event. Doors will be open from 6-8pm. Please plan to visit all the open spaces.

Students from Ms. Weber and Ms. Underwood’s classes will be showcasing in room 1, come and learn how to create Artist Trading cards. You’ll be using watercolour/pen and learning more about zentangling!

Around room 8 you’ll find card making using felt markers and water. Let your creative juices flow, find a room 2 or 8 student (Ms. Harder or Ms. Hurst) to help you learn more.

What’s Pointalism you ask? Check out room 10 to learn more. This space is hosted by Mrs. Warkentin and Mr. Ramada.

Want to learn more about recording and editing videos? Plan to spend some time in room 4 with Ms. Degner and Mr. Rehak. These are skills that students are practicing at school, come try it for yourself!

In room 5 you can try some yarn weaving. Ms. Doi and Mrs. Kaban’s students have some creations to share, and you should try make your own too!

Don’t forgot to leave time for some creative movement in the gym. While Kyrsten has moved to another school, her teachings remain with us. They’ll be video looping in the space for you to follow. Enjoy the creativity and watch your child’s skills!

We hope you will have time to visit all 6 of these spaces, try out each of the options, learn more from your child, and have some fun.

See you then!
