Good morning AFS families

Thank you for a great week back at school. We loved welcoming your children, seeing their faces, and learning more about them. It’s going to be an amazing year here at AFS.

Opening our school doors at 8:38 has been working really well. We appreciate your support to get your children to school on time and in class by 8:42, what a great way to start the day! When you arrive between 8:27 and 8:38 please have your children come to the south end of the school, where the playground is located. Supervision is provided starting at 8:38. OSC (kindergarten – grade 6 out of school care) is also out back during this time period. If you arrive at or after 8:42 please enter through the front door, and reminder your child they need to sign in and get a welcome slip from the office so their teachers knows they have been accounted for.

Your flexibility for our opening day was so greatly appreciated, the smoke meant the teachers were not able to come outside and greet all the students, however we did all get the opportunity to meet in the gym. All students were introduced to all the adults in the building, and everyone got to see each other on the very first day!

This Friday marks our first assembly, celebrating Terry Fox. All students will participate in the assembly prior to heading outside to participate in our Terry Fox Run. The assembly begins at 9:30 in the gym. All parents are invited to join, if you are available. We’d love to see some parents in the gym and also running around the field with the students.

The BB4CK (brown bagging) program has started again at Alex Ferguson school. We greatly appreciate the support they provide some of our students. If this is a program you need please reach out to them or to me (Helen Sharpe, hcsharpe@cbe.ab.ca ) and we can get you connected for next week.

Please join me in welcoming Ms. Dimitra Mendoza to the AFS family. Ms. Mendoza will be working with room 5 students for the remainder of the school year. At this time she is teaching full time while Mrs. Warkentin is away. Upon Mrs. Warkentin’s return they will resume their co-teaching duties, allowing Ms. Mendoza time with room 5 grades 1 and 2 students each afternoon during the week as well as all day Fridays. Thank you for joining our team Ms. Mendoza, we look forward to getting to know you better and having you as a member of our school community.

A note regarding the calendarYou might notice that the dates highlighted blue are identified as blue days. Please note, blue days are non-instructional days, meaning that the school is closed for students. Teachers will be here working and participating in professional development. In addition, there were a few typos:

  • IPPs and will be sent home in January. Please note the date should read Jan 23, not January 12
  • The Frisbee Residency with Frisbee Rob is a four day residency from Monday June 1  – Thursday June 4
  • The grade 6 farewell assembly will be on Thursday May 28, there will not be an assembly in June

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Have a wonderful rest of your weekend.

Your AFS Principal,
Ms. Helen Sharpe
